Review Of The Year pt.1 - Music
time to take stock culturally - and influenced by publications left right and centre (and gaytard) i've drawn together a bunch of lists which encompass my favourite articles of culture from 2006.

 best albums of 2006

1. el perro del mar - el perro del mar

5. kazumi nikaidoh - no album
6. juana molina - son
7. smoosh - free to stay
8. the tiny - starring someone like you
9. beirut - gulag orchestra

18.

20.
ms. john soda - notes and the like

el perro del mar created her own sound by filtering the spector wall-of-sound thru desolation; liz durrett made the record cat power ought to have made, thanksgiving put me in mind of early palace bros - and neko case made the best album of her career.

I look forward to the film/book/tv entry.

I was chatting to my fella about the films released this year (in an Oscar/lavender kind of way) and couldn't think of anything that's been out, of any worth. Lots of middle class women seem to be keen on 'The Queen' (not seen) but I know of nothing else; so I look forward to recommendations, for the DVD shop.

I've avoided TV for most of the year (still getting over my Quizmania habit), but I suspect I've missed nothing: Please correct me if I'm wrong. (I notice the comedy awards didn't really have any comedy to choose from).

I've been immensely lame when it comes to books, and have no right to comment.

well 'the queen' was utter dogshit - don't let anyone tell you otherwise. so helen mirren can act...does that make for a good film by itself? by oscar's standard perhaps but not mine. i suggest she hires a camcorder and films herself rendering six of shakespeare's soliloquys for her next film, if acting alone is sufficient. there's this poetic motif of a stag running thru the film which is the most tedious and embarrassing thing i've ever seen - and tony blair is an impression, not a performance. so, so shit.

I certainly wasn't gonna rush down to Blockbusters for it. And that Michael Sheen bloke (who does appear to be a bit of a Mike Yarwood), along with Bill Nighy, seems to be flavour of the year: Often a bad sign, for me.

I did hear Radio 4, in the background, going on about nominations, but it was all a blur. Dame Mirrens name was mentioned. I nearly fell off my sag bag in mock shock...

So, what are the films of the year?

that newsnight culture panel programme thing that i can't remember the name of loved joanna newsom's new album. 5 lengthy songs sounds exhausting to me.

haven't heard charlotte gainsbourg, but quite want to.. am glad to see at least one of here songs is worthwhile.

i should stop being so lazy with music. downloading even seems too much effort.

am looking forward to your books installment, i am concentrating on reading good stuff as have just been re-reading rubbish all term. am reading 'the accidental' by ali smith at the moment, which is from 2005 i think, but am enjoying it. (have you read it? i think astrid is a brilliantly portrayed pretensious-precocious preteen)

also looking forward to your tv judgements, as i probably will actually have seen most of it myself xxx

of all the critical disciplines, that of music review is by far the most wanting. partly to do with the fact that music is the most sentimental of arts; but also because the people who find their way towards its criticism have little interest in the craft of writing and/or a very narrow field of cultural reference.

good music is crystallised emotion - its appeal is rarely intellectual. how then to critique such a thing? i think the answer is to respond in writing as you would to the music: personally. most music criticism dodges this bullet and attempts to intellectualise what is not cerebral. the results are wan, hollow and disastrous.

the intellectual take on joanna newsom's new record is: that it's audaciously epic (by which they mean: bogged down in layers of unnecessary sound, sprawling and overlong. it's debt to classical music is immediate intellectual kudos - what is this? pop music reaching for the lofty heights of the highbrow? must be amazing then...etc etc.

the true test of 'ys' will be born out soon enough. after all the beard stroking and bullshit hype has died off, people will be left with a record they can't engage with, and will turn to 'the milk eyed mender' instead.

the worst of it is that joanna newsom will think she's doing something right - and will make lazier records. she'll think that she need never edit, or work inside disciplined forms again. the results will be cacophony and glossolalia.

i have read the accidental, yes - and it will feature in my book list, largely because i read it this year, since that's when the paperback came out.

I never know when things come out as I live in a world without time, so I would probably go with anything you've listed there that I've heard. nina nastasia, dat politics, kimya dawson, obv.
liz durrett. and I had the chance to listen to el perro del mer recently and really liked it.
I can't believe it's only this year I heard these things, it feels like a million years ago.

I dont really like the dresden dolls...dave loves them and I quite like a couple of songs but actually after a while the music itself makes me feel a bit sick because its so obtuse and lacks melody and most of all that girl's personality pisses me off, like she thinks she's super witty and confident and amazing. soz ard.
